Rizal, Paco parks to replace lamps
Home Updated December 30, 2011 05:00 PM

MANILA (Xinhua) -- The government has released 150 million pesos (3.42 million U.S. dollars) to retrofit at least two major parks in Metro Manila to make them more tourist- and environment-friendly, a senior official said Friday.

Department of Budget and Management (DBM) Secretary Florencio Abad said the fund was released to the Department of Tourism (DOT) - National Parks Development Committee (NDPC) to renovate the Rizal and Paco Parks in Manila with energy-efficient lighting fixtures.

"Brighter and safer Rizal and Paco Parks await the public in 2012 for the government is set to improve lighting system in the area beginning January of next year," said Abad.

In particular, he said the funds will be used to replace the 733 existing lamp posts in Rizal Park and 41 in Paco with solar- powered lights; as well as the 456 incandescent and fluorescent bulbs with 534 light-emitting diode (LED) lights.

Abad noted that the use of solar-powered LED lights is being advocated by the government for energy- and cost-efficiency. The retrofitting project will reduce the electricity consumptions of NDPC by 83 percent yearly.

The Musical Dancing Fountain in Rizal Park will also be provided with two energy generation systems as an energy-saving device, Abad said.

"The government is more willing to support projects and programs that will not only bring progress, but more importantly, these projects and programs will take into consideration the preservation of the environment, said Abad.

Various projects that are meant to intensify security and crime prevention efforts of the government will be implemented including the installation of 25 units of closed-circuit television and construction of command and control station at Rizal Park, Abad added.

He also said that some air-conditioning units in NPDC will be replaced with solar-powered units to help save energy and electricity. The implementation of the project will start at the beginning of 2012 and be finished by June 2012 in time for the commemoration of national hero -- Dr. Jose Rizal's birth anniversary.
