SENAKULO SA RIZAL PARK

Executive Director Juliet H. Villegas of the National Parks Development Committee invites everyone to the Rizal Park (Luneta) for the Senakulo sa Rizal Park, in observance of the Lenten Season, starting on Maundy Thursday (April 5), Good Friday (April 6) and Black Saturday (April 7). This Lenten presentation, which will be held at the Rizal Park Open-Air Auditorium, Manila at 6:00 o’clock in the evening, will feature the Samahang Lugod ng Bayan Sinakulista (HUBO) of Taytay, Rizal. Free Admission.

Written by Marthy De Leon and directed by Jose Martinez, Senakulo sa Rizal Park depicts the life, sufferings and passion of Jesus Christ in a conventional and long-established style, in which the spoken verses are in a quintilla form (five eight-syllable-lines per stanza). Sonny Cruz, the President and the son of the late Antonio Cruz, one of the founders of HUBO, will play the role of Jesus.

Samahang Lugod ng Bayan Sinakulista (HUBO) is a group of senakulo performers from Taytay, Rizal who performs annually the traditional senakulo since 1901, using the original script with only minor revisions. It has become a yearly devotion, which has been passed on from generation to generation of HUBO members.

The Senakulo sa Rizal Park is a special project of the National Parks Development Committee, under Executive Director Juliet H. Villegas, which aims to reintroduce to the Filipino public and foreign park visitors a Filipino tradition that has become less familiar to the new generation of Filipinos today. It also provides an alternative place for the public to spend their Holy Week.

Admission to Senakulo sa Rizal Park is free of charge. The public is cordially invited.
